a marathon not a sprint

Playwright Tony McNamara describes a writing career as "a marathon, not a sprint."

Writing a novel is a marathon in itself.

If we pursue the metaphor further, a writer has to run multiple marathons to make a career, and the career of a marathon runner and of a writer then are much the same - but the metaphor is maybe getting a little soggy.
