subtitles

As we have a rubbishy TV set and my hearing is on the decline, I'm watching movies with the subtitles on. I was surprised (& amused) at how much they differ from the spoken words. I'm assuming the subtitles are the script and I'm seeing how much actors contribute with ad libbing. I'm recommending giving it a shot - it's quite entertaining.

Try watching movies with no subtitles and no noise at all. That gives an interesting perspective. Sometimes when I want to come up with story ideas I do this. But weird I know, but it works.

Thanks. I'll give that a try.

I have limited experience of captioning in Australia (limited to one job interview undertaken in a moment of financial desperation). From this experience I conclude: 1. Captioning/subtitles for DVD's are done in a rush; 2. The full text is editing down to the bare bones so that it doesn't cover the whole TV screen; 3. This is the kind of knowledge I never thought I'd have a use for but am pleasantly surprised that my naive assumption, that 'there is a use for everything', may yet be true.
